About ESO

ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, along with the host state of Chile. Several other countries have expressed an interest in membership.

Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three unique observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.

Volunteer Translators

Our network of volunteer translators is making ESO’s products available in different languages so that more people can benefit from them. If you wish to join the group and contribute to sharing astronomy in more languages, please read the information below and fill in the form.

As a volunteer translator you will receive notifications via a dedicated mailing list whenever an opportunity arises. You will be credited for your work and occasionally receive free products from ESO. You will be able to work alone or in collaboration with other translators.

As well as translating ESOcasts and other material from ESO, the translators’ network covers the European Space Agency’s Hubblecast, which is also produced by our team.

To translate videos, we use the dotSUB service which lets people translate the English-language transcripts easily. Full details are available here. Please read the section “Notes for translators of ESO videos” carefully.

If you wish to join our network, please fill in the following form. In order to receive free products from ESO (and ESA/Hubble, if you translate Hubblecasts), please provide a full address.
